5 Tips for a Work-Life Balance

Thursday 7 August 2008 @ 11:08 am

by Heather Bishara
I remember the day that my soon-to-be husband got his first pager. He was so excited to be considered important enough to be given a company pager because, to him, it meant that he was now the new go-to guy - the guy who could be trusted to fix any problem that came up, day or night. He could hardly contain himself!

I, on the other hand, wanted to throw the pager in toilet after its third day on my sweetie’s hip. He had received no less than 25 pages during the few hours we had spent together during these three days. This left me wondering where the line had been crossed between work and home. It also made me think about how I was going to get my fiancé to become more engaged in his life outside of work when he was so unfairly lured by the demands of the people who support his self esteem and who also pay his bills.

What we needed was a work-life balance plan. I had heard of these before, but had never put one together myself. After going through the process, here’s what I have learned:

1. Figure out your priorities.

In order to achieve a work-life balance you first need to figure out what really makes you happy. Is it your family? Your friends? Your career? Something else? Take a moment to write down, in order of importance, what really matters to you most. This will help you establish what it is you really want to spend your time on. If something is not on the list or is rated a low priority, you need to give serious consideration to eliminating this item from your life altogether. By sticking to mid-to-high priority items, you can start building a life that you can be proud of and are excited to actively participate in, not one that you are just going through the motions with.

2. Focus on a few activities.

Let’s face it. Most of us are extremely over-programmed. Every minute of our lives is taken up with various activities that, at some point, we thought we wanted to participate in. The reality is that some or even most of these activities are just drains on our time. If you are serious about achieving a happy work-life balance, then you need to figure out which activities you just can’t live without and focus solely on them. You’ll be amazed at how much time, stress, and energy you’ll save by whittling your activity commitment down to just one or two really rewarding ones.

3. Learn how to say no.

One of the things that gets us into the most trouble with our work-life balance is our inability to say no. As human beings we have empathy for one another and we really do not want to let anyone down. In the meantime, we are letting ourselves down because every time we accept a new responsibility, we are taking time away from our personal priorities. Saying no is not easy and it can takes lots of practice in order to find a way that makes both you and the person you are saying no to feel comfortable with the outcome. But in doing so, you are freeing yourself and your time to focus on things that matter most to you.

4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Life can be overwhelming, even when we are organized and have our priorities in line. The fact is that everyone needs help sometimes. By not asking for help we are creating more stress in our lives that can be damaging to our overall health. Stress alone can bring on other health issues. As an example, pre-diabetes can be caused by Insulin Resistance-related obesity which, in turn, may be brought on by stress. Various forms of stress release the steroid cortisol and this process may result in weight gain. And we all know that added weight can bring on additional complications like high cholesterol and heart disease.

So what types of things can you do to relieve some of this stress and avoid potential health risks? Ask a neighbor to watch your kids while you go to dinner with your spouse. Or have a neighborhood kid mow your lawn so that you can spend some quality doing something else that you love. The extra effort is worth it as you keep your life and your relationships on track and keep stress down to a minimum.

5. Always have something to look forward to.

We all are a little happier when we have a vacation, fun activity or big family gathering coming up on the calendar. Everybody’s work calendar is booked with various activities so why not your home calendar as well? Planning special events will enhance your life by allowing you to keep those personal relationships with friends and family strong. So turn off your cell phone and make the most of these special occasions. You might find that you have more of a skip in your step at work because of it!

Personal Time Management: Learn How to Use Your Time Effectively

Thursday 7 August 2008 @ 8:08 am

by Ryan Whiteside
If you live or work in one of the busiest cities in the world like New York City, you will see people who are walking purposefully fast towards their destination. It seems like time is always of the essence, every minute counts, and everyone is always in a rush.

When you see a person who is rushing off somewhere, there are two possible scenarios. First, that individual could be rushing off because of being late – or second, it could be because that person wants to have plenty of time to arrive to that destination.

If you want to be the type of person who can have that luxury to get to an appointment with plenty of time to spare, rather than always rushing off due to lateness, then you need to learn how to use your time effectively. This is where personal time management comes in.

What is Personal Time Management?

First, here is a quick definition of personal time management. This term refers to the efficient and effective use of your personal time – to meet your professional and personal goals.

Take your typical workday as an example. On the start of a workweek, do you usually put off creating difficult reports until later in the week, or do you deal with them immediately? When the deadline for a project nears, do you find yourself dealing with more work than you can handle or are you always right on schedule?

Your answers to these questions would be a reflection of whether you are applying the basic rules of personal time management or not. One of the rules that you need to learn about in personal time management is learning how to prioritize.

When working on a project, you need to deal with the difficult tasks first – so that you will have plenty of time later to revise or make any adjustments on it. Knowing which issues to deal with first, and setting your long-term and short-term goals is part of effective personal time management.

Advantages of Effective Personal Time Management

With effective time management, these are the benefits that you will get to enjoy:
• You can eliminate unnecessary activities which take up your time through prioritization.
• You will have a regular workload each day, rather than dealing with a multitude of tasks all at one time.
• You can monitor your work’s progress.
• You will have more leisure or personal time.
• You can plan your day, week and month more efficiently.
Additional Effective Time Management Tips

Remember that procrastination is the worst enemy of effective time management. By putting things off, your work will only pile up, giving you a heavier load than usual.

If a particular task proves to be more difficult than you think, you may not have enough time to work on it and you will not be able to meet the deadlines set by your superiors, or the deadlines that you have set for yourself.

The key to ensuring that you are effectively managing your time is to organize things. Create a to-do list, in order of priority so that you can accomplish one task at a time, rather than dealing with a lot of things at one time and accomplishing nothing.

All in all, personal time management will allow you to use your time effectively, and easily meet both your short-term and long-term goals.

Time + Energy = Your Life

Thursday 7 August 2008 @ 8:08 am

by Dorlon Peckham
Time? Energy? Possibility? Potential? WHOLENESS? Healing? What else is there? You? What about happiness? Time is the first component in life’s equation.

Time, or the management of time, is short sighted when building a life of meaning and purpose. A life filled with potential and possibility requires more consideration than simply managing time. It requires an understanding of what ingredients are necessary.

For example, if you use the wrong ingredients when baking a cake, the cake is a flop! Do not allow your life to flop! Do whatever is necessary to find your “perfect recipe”.

Time + Energy = an understanding of what can and cannot be managed. Time cannot be managed. Time manages you. People cannot be managed. You are a person. Leaders lead people. Dictators push or suppress people. If you become the ruthless dictator of your own life (or allow others or circumstances to dictate you) you will become resentful and angry. Learn to become the admired leader of your own life’s energy and not brutal dictator of “self.”

Too much pressure on “self” will short-circuit your wiring. Once you understand energy management, you step on to life’s mystical path toward WHOLENESS and healing. Energy is something you can manage. Your “core being” is energy. Energy is your “core being.” If you are consumed by anger energy, take time to discover, “WHY?” Anger is not necessarily bad.

If you have been wrongly violated, it is imperative this energy is fully investigated. If the anger energy is not dealt with, you could be electrocuted. Anger energy may be real or may be a fabrication of the mind. If the anger has a real, root cause due to a person, place, or thing — it or they have stolen your sunshine — take your sunshine back! In other words, transform anger energy into the highest-quality, balanced energy possible. It may take therapy, exercise, reaching out to others who have had similar violations, meditation, and/or the discovery of your life’s passion.

NEWSBREAK: Some people will simply choose not to take the necessary action steps toward WHOLENESS and healing. At least you will know when certain people do not want to make positive changes. Many are more comfortable with negative energy and are quite happy being miserable. If your energy is low, find safe ways to elevate it. Maybe you are tired? Try sleeping. This sounds basic and it is. Many are simply over worked, over stressed, overly over. Maybe your nutrition is in deficit? Maybe you are ill? Maybe problems have been pushed-to-the-side or swept-under-the-rug? Address the reasons why your energy levels are low and do everything in your power to safely increase this energy. When your energy is too high, be aware, and calm the energy. Energy, which is too high, can be just as debilitating as energy, which is too low.

The key is to embrace, cultivate and manage a high-quality, balanced energy within your “core-being.” Time + Energy = Happiness?

NEWSBREAK: True happiness is only a side effect of being WHOLE and healed. When happiness becomes a person’s only goal, the opposite occurs. Life can be difficult. No one escapes the mix of emotional energies, which flow in-and-out of our “core being” throughout our lives. The good news is, “Everything we need is within reach.” Time for “being and doing” + cultivating high-quality energy levels = WHOLENESS and healing and a life filled with unlimited potential and possibility. WHOLENESS and healing are a life-long process and practice. If you manage your energy thoughtfully, everything else will begin to fall into place. If you choose not to, the opposite will hold true. Your life will undoubtedly begin to unravel. This has a 100% lifetime guarantee! If your life is less than you wish it to be, STOP. STOP and reassess. Reassess and restart. You receive equal to how you choose to invest your time and energy. Ouch! That hurts! Time only ? Your Life Time is only one component in life’s equation. Energy is the other component. Cultivate and manage high-quality energy levels within your “core being.” Or not? Your life depends on it.

Strategies To Maximize Time

Monday 4 August 2008 @ 2:08 am

by Rich Butler
TIME IS GOLD!
Time cannot be bought!
Time cannot be recovered!
Time is of the essence!

You have probably heard the statements above from people. I hope you agree with them; however what matters most is that you value your time.

For me as a life and business coach, I define time as the ‘Best Free Capital” we can use to achieve our dreams. If you are that kind of person who doesn’t have dreams because of the economic situation you are facing, let me say this to you:

“There is always room for success for everyone because each person has his / her own time to manage their life.”

Although I would also agree that each person can achieve success different. Some can achieve it easily, some don’t.

You cannot blame anyone for your situation. Each person has been given 24 hours everyday to live life. It’s up to you how you are using it. If most of the time is wasted I’m quite sure you will not be happy with the result on your life in the near future.

The funny thing is, I’ve been hearing a lot of people saying and complaining that they don’t have enough time to achieve success. Believe me, they are all fooling themselves.

You are the only person liable on how you use your time.

Once you realize that you need to value time, it is now time for you to start changing your lifestyle and investing on those success producing works.

There is a misconception about how people view time. They believe that they are using their time properly at times they are busy. It’s not true! Being busy does not always mean that you value every minute of your day. Many times, we are busy on those things that don’t matter much.

Let me ask you, “does working overtime makes you successful? Yes, if it resulted for your work promotion. If not, it is a waste. It is still recommended to invest on money making activities. Like reading business books for to be more knowledgeable about handling business, right?

Maximizing time is not easy, it takes a good plan to achieve it:

1. Have a daily schedule. It will serve as a reminder for you so that you would know how you are using some of your spare time. Review your daily activities and organize it properly.

Based from my personal experience, it’s nice to post your daily schedules on your refrigerator, work table, on your car or on those places you usually visit.

2. Think of those times when you can be multitasking. For example you can do laundry while reading some books or having groceries while listening to audio coaching sessions.

3. If you can delegate some of your works loads or task, do it! Even if you are the parents, you can ask assistance from your children with some household chores. Or just simply hire a cleaner.

Remember, time cannot be recovered. Once is passes away, it will never be back. So be wise and maximize!

Oftentimes the selections are better, making it easier to find the exact items you are wanting in a matter of seconds. See other styles and colors that may not be apparent on the racks due to low inventories in the store or in your size. Find your size with ease with just a click of a button.

Online stores are open 24 hours. Time Managements Doom Loop

Saturday 2 August 2008 @ 8:08 pm

by Dorlon Peckham
Time Management’s Doom Loop is analogous to Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity: Doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results.

Time Management’s Doom Loop Day: Wake up. Jump out of bed. Get on the treadmill. Glimpse at your spou se as you pass each other in the hallway cause you are late for work. Shout at the kids to, “hurry up!” Drop the kids off. Go through the robotic motions of your job. Get off work. Grab a quick bite. Bicker with your spouse (a little or a lot). Sit in front of the television or the Internet until it is time for bed. When your head hits the pillow your mind races through the day, then moves on to tomorrow as you try to get to sleep. The next day?

Repeat…

Time Management’s Doom Loop is what many Americans find themselves revolved in.
This seems grim and it is. Many American have been doom-looped! Some reasons? Money is tight. The economy is stuck. The wars America is currently engaged in. Fuel prices going north. Housing markets going south. Our children are at risk. We are at risk. Drug and alcohol abuse is on the rise. Domestic violence and crime stories have become an accepted part of the daily news stories. This is real stuff and it has nothing to do with managing our time better. Doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results? This is insanity.

Time Management’s Doom Loop is insanity! Time Management does not address how to change.

Time, by the way, cannot be managed. Managing time is like trying to manage a raging river. A person who jumps in (or falls in) a raging river has only one option - to survive its deadly current. Are you trying to keep from drowning?

Stop for a moment and ride the current. Let me throw you a life vest. This life vest is a new concept called, “Energy Management.”

Energy is something you can manage.

Time management has duped all of us. Do not feel bad. Life today is like a white-water rafting trip on the raging river. Many are just trying to survive its current. Without the right equipment, however, this rafting trip is simply too dangerous.

You are your equipment.

How are your energy levels? Low? High? Balanced?

Energy management provides a life worth living. When a person’s energy levels are balanced, a person becomes ready to fully engage in life’s process. When a person is out of balance he or she is back in the loop - the doom loop.

Too high of energy levels within a person creates madness. Life becomes chaotic. Busy, busy, busy doing what? Busy for what? More often than not, those who are overly busy use this as an excuse not to engage in the richness of life, which seems like a distant fantasy.

Too low of energy levels within a person creates apathy and lethargy. Life becomes robotic. Not much to care about. More often than not, those who are depressed use this as an excuse not to engage in the richness of life, which seems like a distant fantasy.

Energy levels, which are too high or too low, become the excuse escape.

If you do not want to change - don’t. At least now you can blame the doom loop.

If you do want to change, welcome to Energy Management.

Ask yourself the following two questions:

1. Why am I doing what I’m doing? Explain it to yourself and see if it makes sense.
2. Do I like what I’m doing? If yes, keep doing it. If no, do something about it.

Write five things in your current reality you would like to change. This is called you current reality because it represents, today.

Write five things in your ideal reality you would like to see change. This is called your ideal reality because it represents your possibilities and potential.

Bridge the two realities together with your “why” answer. Manage the energy you invest in your time and the time you invest in your energy - this will give you the highest returns.

Time Management, Energy Management, and The Entrepreneur

Friday 1 August 2008 @ 9:08 am

by Dorlon Peckham
Time management is an old school paradigm. Energy management is the new way of the entrepreneurial activist.

Energy management has nothing to do with trying to manage petroleum, coal, electricity, solar or wind power. Energy management is the foundational approach entrepreneurs must learn, understand and cultivate within themselves, their staff and their products and services. Entrepreneurs who do not embrace energy management will soon be, “Going Out of Business.”

Time management has little to do with the challenges entrepreneurs face today.

Time cannot be managed. People cannot be managed. Leaders lead. Managers manage. Leaders lead people. Managers manage things. Time is not a thing. People are not things. Time is not people. People are not time. Entrepreneurs who think they can manage people are in for a rude awakening! How does the hollow sound of, “Going Out of Business,” resonate? People are energy. Energy is the fuel which powers employees, customers, products and services either toward or away… The entrepreneur who is insightful enough to manage and balance high-quality energy levels will be leaving his or her competition in the dust.

Time is needed to cultivate and manage the high-quality energy levels customers are starving for. Toxic energy will drive employees and customers away. This comes with a guarantee. Look around… Does this ring true? Are employees and customers taking their business elsewhere? We begin hearing excuses coming from toxic energy types who blame the economy, the housing market, or fuel prices for what is happening. This blame is the beginning of a slow death for many entrepreneurial ventures. Those who stop trying to manage time, but instead, begin managing energy will discover untapped markets. Enlightened energy managers provide opportunity for all stakeholders. Energy managers must be authentic, however. Employees and customers are not as stupid as some entrepreneurs may think. High-quality, balanced energy cascades from “the being” of the awakened entrepreneur. Toxic energy also cascades from “the being” of the greed-centered entrepreneur. Profits are more important than ever! Still, it is the energy behind the profits that fuel and separate the authentic from the unauthentic.

Time management and the wilted concepts of managing people are over. The future is now! Energy management is now! If you want to become the awakened, highly successful entrepreneur, begin by cultivating and managing high-quality, balanced energy levels within your “self.” Do whatever it takes to become WHOLE and healed. A person cannot give what he or she does not have. If the entreprenuer is infected, the toxic-energy virus infects leadership, management, systems, protocols, employees, customers, products and services. If the entrepreneur recognizes he or she is infected with this deadly virus, but does not know what to do, seek help. The good news is, “Everything a person needs is within reach.” The bad news is, recognizing the toxic energy virus exists in the first place. Not knowing, is a symptom of the disease. In the case of many toxic entrepreneurs, the more infected he or she is, the less aware he or she is as carrier of the disease. “The Cosmic Two-by-Four,” however, always wins. Clunk! Over the head… “Going Out of Business,” signs begin littering the landscape.

Time is the energy we do not fully understand. Yes, there are clocks. We use clocks to measure one hour to the next. Albert Einstein explains “time and energy” in his Theory of Relativity. For those of us who need some assistance in better understanding some of what Albert was trying to tell us, here it is: “If you are with the one you love… an hour seems like a minute. If you are sitting on a hot stove… a minute seems like an hour.”

Time is affected by the energy a person puts behind it. The energy a person brings to time is the winning or losing force. Whether you are the entrepreneur or not, make it your mission to cultivate and manage high-quality, balanced energy levels — or not — it is not up to anyone but you. Here are some choices to consider: Great energy! Good energy! Bad energy! Toxic energy! Just know, all energy is contagious.

Time? Management?

Friday 1 August 2008 @ 9:08 am

by Dorlon Peckham
Time is a funny thing.

If time is a funny thing, time management is hilarious. It steals the show! If it were not so sad, it would be funny.

Has time stolen your show?

Let us examine what we are dealing with.

For kids, time drags on. Waiting for summer vacation. Waiting for another birthday. Waiting to open the presents. Waiting seems endless for a child.

As we age and enter the real world of work, family, responsibility, deadlines, lists and stress, time is never enough. What is up with that?

Time? Is it real? If time is real, why is it when we are doing things we love, time flies? When we are doing things we loathe, time drags on?

Let’s leave the debate of whether time is real or not to the physicists and mathematicians.

What we want to discuss is how time affects your world of potential and possibilities. You know, the good life! The life everyone else seems to be living.

Just so we have a common point of reference, let us call 24 hours, one day. If you are a resident of planet earth, all people have this same 24-hour time period. Here is the stretch: Some people make better use of this 24-hour time period (a day) than others . If you don’t believe me, Google it.

But then there is quality of life. Time management, if it were possible to manage time, does not address the quality of life but rather the quantity of things to get done. In other words, how much can a person jam in to a 24-hour time period?

Currently, the average American (it is said) is trying to jam in “31 hours of stuff to do into a 24 hour time period.” No wonder, we as a society, are losin’ it!

Time management or insanity? You decide.

So what can you do?

On the other side of time, is energy.

You are energy. Energy is you. You are not time. Time is not you.

Depending on a person=E 2s energy levels indicates20on how much time it takes (or does not take) to do the same things. Time is compressed or extended based on a person’s energy levels.

Have you ever been depressed, sick or hung over? Time moves at a snails pace. How much time does it take to do the simplest of task? Have you ever been way too busy running in circles? Where did the time go? Vroom!

What happens to time when you are doing what you love? Or with the one you love? Time goes too quickly. What about when you are counting widgets at work? Time drags on… “Who unplugged the clock?” you might ask.

Time management has duped us. It is at the core of most of our problems.

Energy management is the answer. So what is the question?

The question is: How does a person manage his or her energy levels?

By realizing it is possible. For each person energy management is slightly different. There is one common thread, which connects all of us. We are human beings.

What does a human being need? Here are five basic concepts to get you started:

Physical — thoughtful care of inner and outer body parts
Spiritual — believe in something greater than self
Mental — consistent learning, unlearning and relearning
Social — people who make our world bigger not smaller
Emotional — okay with just being — remember, we are human beings, not human doings

This is a great starting point. Add to the list. N ot another time management list but a realization you are ready to move forward. If you are not in love with your future, look at the above five suggestions and try and figure out where your energies are lacking, overly consumed, misdirected or trashed. Balancing your energy levels is the beginning of “The first day of the rest of you life!”

Place time management in the trash where it belongs. And, be careful not to recycle the past. Recycling is best kept for recyclables — not the past. Start moving the energy forward… with hope, faith, courage and inspiration! This is the best energy!
