How Have You Spent Your Time?

Tuesday 3 May 2011 @ 9:05 am

by fangcao1998
I saw a film called The Diving Bell and the Butterfly a few years ago. It’s based on the book of the same name. The author, a Frenchman by the name of Jean-Dominique Bauby, suffered a stroke aged 43 that paralyzed his entire body except his left eye, which he used to blink out his memoir with the help of a therapist.
It’s an amazing story, both depressing and inspiring. The author thought he had all the time in the world but then he lost the ability to use his body and realized that his life and the people he loved were much more valuable than he had ever realized previously.

The director of the movie, a prolific American artist called Julian Schnabel, loved the book so much that he learned to speak French to direct the movie. He once summarised his attitude to life thus: “I believe we won’t be judged on whether our actions are good or bad but on how much time we’ve wasted” …

How much time do you feel you’ve wasted?

I feel like I’ve wasted a lot of time. I’ve traveled a lot and worked a lot of different jobs, but lately I’ve been wondering what it is I’ve really achieved. I’ve never worked for more than a few months on any one project and now I find myself asking myself where all the time has gone. We often don’t notice how fast time goes until an anniversary rolls around and you realize that it’s been X amount of years since you graduated high school, or three years since you got married or that it’s been nine years since the September 11 attacks on New York.

You could have moved mountains in that time, written a book, or learned another language; instead most of us have just got older (and maybe a bit fatter).

There’s an Australian writer and broadcaster called Phillip Adams. A few years ago he had this to say.

“When people say how do you do so many things? I often answer them, without meaning to be cruel, ‘How do you do so little?’” said Adams.

“It seems to me that people have vast potential. Most people can do extraordinary things if they have the confidence, or take the risks. Yet most people don’t. They sit in front of the telly (television) and treat life as if it goes on forever,” he said.
Do you make the most of your time? Have you achieved your dreams?

Creating the Perfect Schedule for Your College Career

Tuesday 3 May 2011 @ 8:05 am

by Tommy Greene
Before you begin your school, you will need to create a schedule for the classes you are going to attend during your first semester. College is very expensive, and taking even one unnecessary class can cost you hundreds of dollars, not to mention your time.

Students generally do not want to be in school any longer than they possibly have to. This is why you need to make sure that your semesters are planned out carefully, so you are taking the right classes at the right times.

The first thing you need to do is to choose a major, so you can direct your studies. Once you know what major you are going to pursue, you need to make sure that you know all of the requirements that need to be met in order to get your degree.

Once you have a list of all of the courses that you will need to complete over your four years in attendance, you need to plan out which semester is going to hold which classes, so that everything is completed in time. Do not feel pressured to take all courses listed under “first year” of your major.

It is important that you learn not to over-schedule yourself, as this can lead to poor grades, and stress. Taking about four classes per semester is very reasonable, if you want to ensure that you have enough time to dedicate to the homework for each class.

If you start a semester and feel that you have too much going on, you can always drop a class as long as it is before the drop deadline. This period usually lasts about two weeks-it is always better to have one class too many going in, than not enough, for this reason.

If you plan to have a part time job, it is important that you also calculate that into your course load. Being a full time student is like having a full time job, so make sure that you take this into consideration.

It is generally advised not to work for more than ten hours a week in a side job. There are a few very important things to note when choosing courses.

Make sure that you look in all of the class notes to see if you need any kind of prerequisite courses before you take the particular course. Sometimes you will need two or three other classes under your belt before you can take the one you really want to take.

You want to create your schedule thoroughly and carefully, so that you do not end up losing a year because you lack a prerequisite for a particular course. It can be difficult to balance all of these out, and keep the whole puzzle straight, but it is well worth the time spent preparing.

Your school website should list all of the proper information for you to know if you need a prerequisite or not. Learn from the mistakes of those who have gone before you, and do not waste time taking courses that will be of no use to you, toward furthering your degree.

Talk to people who have attended your college, and ask them for any advice that they may have. They will know what sections are harder than others, and which professors will make your life more difficult.

Researching your professors before you go can be one of the most important things you do in your college career. Your professors can truly make or break your learning experience.

There are always going to be teachers who love what they do, along with ones that are very burned out, and ready to retire. Word of mouth is one of the best ways that you can sort through the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to professors.

Make sure that you pay attention to whether your particular courses require labs. Some do, particularly the science ones, and some do not.

Labs can take several hours a week, and lots of extra work. If you have a lab, while it will probably not give you any extra credits, treat it like an entirely separate class-it needs its own amount of homework, study, and class time.

If you are careful to consider all of these factors when designing the time ahead of you. If you put enough time and research into your plan, you will have a successful and interesting semester.

Employees Swindling Owners

Tuesday 3 May 2011 @ 8:05 am

by articlewritingexpertise
Employee time and attendance can be a difficult thing for many companies to manage. Standardized time clocks tend to have problems, and when a magnetic strip gives out it proves to be even more difficult handling the payroll of your employee.

But there is a sensible solution that can not only help you to reach a solution, but it is a proven one that can keep your employees honest, while giving you a regular status update on the schedule of your employees. That solution is called Call the Time!

With this powerful tool, companies can have their employees dial into a secure dedicated phone number that allows them to clock in and out from work easily. There is no more hovering around a time clock waiting to clock in. Instead, employees can setup at their desk and call in at the designated time, the automated time stamp will then let their manager know what time they clocked in while the system maintains a cumulative total.

Time clock fraud is one of the most expensive items that companies have to deal with. With employees clocking in each other right on time, there should be a more sensible solution. Now there is. With Call the Time as your time and attendance software, you have the chance to know that the individual clocking in is your employee.

This amazing software uses voice recognition software that is designed to acknowledge your employee while preventing anyone else from clocking them in. This means you only get charged for hours actually worked instead of paying an employee for the 10 minutes they are late every day.

Managers still have the option to adjust time as needed though, proving to be even more effective. If your employee forgets to clock in, a manager has the chance to update the time and correct it for them. Any strange or uncharacteristic attendance patterns are also sent to the manager so they can review and resolve them before they become an issue on payday.

Companies that have a restrictive software policy won’t be affected by this software at all. Instead, there is an online webpage that is dedicated to your company. Since it works with every available browser, there is no concern about not being able to have access to the information you need, when you need it the most.

Another trick some employees like to play is adjusting the time clock. With Call the Time, employers receive a program that cannot be adjusted by the employee. To fully ensure that the time stamps remain accurate, the system synchronizes the time. There is no room left for any possible mistakes, as information is accurate and straight to the point.

How do you stop employees from writing down times that are inaccurate?

Best of all this software can prove to be full service for the manager. It can show you schedules and help you to determine the best solution for keeping your company fully staffed while minimizing attendance issues. Take some time to explore all that Call the Time can do for you, and make it your top choice for employee time and attendance software.

CTT - Time Tracker

Tuesday 3 May 2011 @ 8:05 am

by Z1Cycle
A Reliable Employee Time Tracker

Telecommuting used to be something only dreamed of for some employees. For employers it used to be considered something of a logistical nightmare with dozens of questions which up until recently largely were answered with solutions that were less than optimal or could not be answered at all. Technology and times have changed and companies are looking more favorably on allowing an increasing portion of their workforce to work offsite.

An offsite workforce has several advantages. The primary advantage is a significant reduction in the overhead of a business. You do not have to maintain a large office space or the necessary equipment and supplies to handle a staff. You can run a significantly sized business from the comfort of a home office through telecommuting. It also allows you to have representatives all over the country or world, increases response times for service-oriented jobs, and increases the market area for sales jobs.

It does however have one major disadvantage unless you have a database or website that monitors activity it is almost impossible to verify the activities of employees and ensure that they are working the hours they are collecting. Handling a website with log ins, tracking, ISP reporting and so forth can be expensive and generally requires technical support. This requires dedicated software and hardware as well as staff.

A phone call in time tracker can help to eliminate the need for such measures. It allows you to input user information including the location and schedule of the employee. If there is a deviation in either location or the allotted entered schedule a report is generated. These systems are often web based and generate a variety of reports that can assist in making payroll activities easier and ultimately more accurate.

The system helps to eliminate several different issues that plague employers who are looking to telecommute or have offsite employees. The first major question is how do you know employees are where they say there are and that they are actually working. Answering this question depends on the type of business you are running however, these call in time trackers include location information. If the location is important, it can help to eliminate this worry.

Offsite or telecommuting employees often tend to work a variety of schedules. Even if there is a deviation in the schedule entered for the employee it is still possible to track the time between call ins to ensure the accuracy of the payroll. Finally, the accuracy of payroll is something that plagues any employer whether they are running a business completely onsite, onsite and telecommuting or completely through telecommuting employees.

Having a system which automatically generates reports for employees who telecommute reduces the amount of overall paperwork and allows employers to keep to a consistent pay schedule without having to deal with verifying and checking all the data in a report. The system will automatically provide you with a report of any issues eliminating a considerable amount of time and effort from the job.

5 Easy Time Management Tips

Tuesday 3 May 2011 @ 8:05 am

by Michael Griffiths
For the majority of people time management is a huge problem that stops them from achieving all the tasks they need to get done to make them successful. How you implement your time each day effects not only what you achieve but also what you learn.

Low Information Diet
Law of Perceived Importance by Parkinson
Saying No
Half Hour of Power
80/20 Rule

Low Information Diet
We live in a world full of information and the temptation exists to digest as much information as possible. Information is time consuming and most the information you consumer is either negative or irrelevant to your goals. (Think newspaper, TV, Magazines, Social Blogs.)

Time management is really about making better use of your time. Living on a low-information diet is one way to do this

For the next week:
No reading emails before 11:00am. You may quickly scan for urgent emails if required by your role. Use this time instead to achieve one of your most important goals for the day

Avoid newspapers, magazines or talk-back style radio
Stop visiting news and non-goal related blogs and websites. No web surfing, limit your television viewing to one hour of relaxation viewing only , before you digest any information, ask yourself, Will this information help me achieve one of my immediate and important goals?

With all the free time this will create you can complete your daily actions that will move you closer to your 90 day goals.

Law of Perceived Importance of Parkinson
If I gave you 24hrs to produce a report on the impact of room temperature on staff productivity, the time constraints would force you to focus and take action. If I gave you a week, you would spend five days considering options and two days preparing the report.

If I gave you a month it would sit on the back-burner for two weeks, then you would call a meeting to discuss, send a series of back and forth emails and create the final report in the last two days, am I right?

Law of Parkinson states that a tasks perceived importance and complexity will increase in relation to the time allotted for its completion. In other term, the longer you allow for a task to be completed, the more complex and important that task is perceived.

The solution is simple. Shorten time frames to reduce the perception of complexity of tasks.

Saying No
Even more powerful than setting short time frames, is just saying no. It works like this:

Do you think you could put together a report on the impact of room temperature on staff productivity?

Reply: No.
If you are a bit of a softy, you could replace the no with, I would be happy to help you, but I need you to show me how this will help us achieve our goal of (Insert important agreed upon business goal for which this task is not relevant).

Half Hour of Power
Want a tip to help you get out of bed each morning? Every night before bed spend 30 minutes setting your actions for tomorrow. Decide what actions you will achieve tomorrow to move you closer to your 90 day goals.

80/20 Rule
I put this one last because it is one of the more common time management habits and you may have learnt in the past. That said, it is far too powerful to leave out and worthy of a reminder.

The 80/20 rule states that 80% of outputs are the result of 20% of inputs. For example, 80% of profit is the result of 20% of customers. This also means that the remaining 20% of outputs are the result of your other 80% of inputs. (i.e. the other 20% of profits is made up by 80% of customers.)

To take back your time you must identify the 20% of inputs that create the 80% of outputs. For example, cold calling 20 clients per day for two hours per day produces one new client per week, whereas one phone call to a local business partner asking to meet and discuss a joint venture takes two hours in total and leads to 10 new clients.

80% of the results you have achieved this year are the result of 20% of your actions. Identify what is creating the most output and scrap the rest.

How to Spend the Time While Your Internet Connection Shuts Down

Tuesday 3 May 2011 @ 8:05 am

by Stacy
It must be the most annoying thing. You cannot check your emails, or login to your facebook to see what others are doing. You can also unable to listen to music, watch movies, or playing computer games online.

So, how do we spend the time when the internet dies? Here is a list for things that you can consider doing.

1.Maintain your computer.
While the internet is available, it is difficult to set apart some time for computer maintenance. Now it is a best time for you. You can now recheck your computer, and see whether there are some software that you don’t need any more.

You can use the Revo Uninstaller to clear up the programs the leftover items. It will be ok if you use the Programs and Features option in Control Panel to remove them. But the problem is there may be some leftover folders and registry settings.

2.Deal with your schedules and notes.
Thanks to Evernote, and OneNote synchronization features, you have put the documents that you need in your computer, and you can deal with them without internet.

3.Learn something.
Some books you buy will contain DVDs in them, especially some language-studying books. If you really thing you need to do something to kill the time, you can put it in your CD-Rom an start learn something. You can use the Doomi to deal with your to-do-list.

4.Read your ebooks.
If you have some e-readers for your computer such as Kindle or Barnes & Noble, you can take some time to read some books. Well. Reading is a good habit.

5.Clean up your computer.
Clean your keyboard and mouse. If you haven’t done it recently, you’ll be surprised how much dust, crumbs of food, or perhaps cat hair that is lodged between the keys. Again you can use Canned Air for this, or if you want to be very thorough, take out each key and get all the junk out of there. You are not already on the desktop gathering dust? Under the bar or regular cleaning. Put forward a computer cleaning kit, cleaning up the dust it under the chassis. Is also to take this opportunity to re-insert the memory section, check the connections, sound card, video card and so on.

6.Why not try to escape from computers and internets?
Most of us have to rely on the internet for the work, and since we have computers at home, it seems that our life has depended on internet so much. So, while the internet connection has shut down, it may be a good time for you to escape from such a lifestyle. Well, I mean maybe you can try to do something that is irrelevant to computer. For example, when there is some difficulty connecting to a network, I will go out for a walk, or talk with the family members (since it can only happen while having dinner).

Undeniable, the time that you find you have something important to do, such as holding a video meeting with somebody, but you are off the net will be manic. At this time, you may need to deal with your work and life and keep them balance.
